After a reasonably comfortable and uneventful flight we arrived in Hong Kong. We figured out how to buy a bus ticket, after standing in line only to get on the bus and be told that we needed exact change if we wanted to get tickets at the door. The buses were double-decker, and the driving was on the left. You don’t have to go to England for these features…
The city is densely packed, and there are great stretches of slum apartment buildings to contrast with the shiny, expensive areas. The bus ride took about a half hour, and we got off very near Chung King Mansion, where we were staying. We navigated the building, got a room and dumped off our stuff, then wandered around. Properly speaking, we didn’t spend any time in Hong Kong proper on our first day. We were on the peninsula north of Hong Kong island, in an area called Kowloon. Kowloon is packed with people from all sorts of places. Many Indians, Africans, Europeans, etc. An extremely diverse area. It would appear that the majority of the Indians are in the business of trying to sell you fake watches, and tailored clothing. Either that, or they run guest houses (the place we stayed was run by Indians).
Anyway, here’s a couple dozen pictures. Next time: the harbor light show.
